This volume contains an introduction to the Latvian epic poem, "Lāčplēsis", for English speakers. In effect, it has two goals: On the onehand, to make the contains of the poem available in English, and, on the other, to provide an introduction to its origins, history, tehnical properties, reception among various groups of Latvian speakers, and social and emotional significance to the Latvian nation.
