One of the forms that Stalin's repressions took was deportation, or, the forced mass relocation of a population. Latvia experienced two large civilian deportations. The first took place on June 14, 1941. The book is about the second mass deportation of the inhabitants on March 25, 1949. A total of 2.2% of the Latvian population was deported then.
