Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of decorative art: beads of obsidian and shell are among the objects most commonly found in excavations at prehistoric villages in Western Asia, and the intrinsic beauty of gold and coloured stones attracted craftsmen in Sumeria and ancient Egypt some 5000 years ago.
